WHAT IS A Y-STR TEST?
The Y-Chromosome DNA test (short tandem repeat or Y-STR) is used to support or disprove a direct paternal connection between 2 or more male participants. This test is also known as a paternal lineage test. The Y-STR DNA test is based on the fact that the Y chromosome is passed from father to son relatively unchanged through the generations.
HOW IS A Y-STR TEST USED?
A Y-STR DNA test can confirm your relationship to male relatives and paternal ancestors. This test is also used to provide additional evidence in difficult paternity cases in which the alleged father is not available for testing. It can tell whether or not a child is related to the alleged father's brothers and other male relatives who share a common paternal lineage. We can either send you a testing kit to collect your DNA samples at home or if your testing has legal implications, we can use a chain of custody collection process where your samples will be taken by a trained professional in local collection center location.

Y-STR TEST FEE
The price of the Y-STR DNA test varies based on the number of males involved. Testing fees vary so please call us to discuss your particular situation. The turnaround time for Y-STR test can vary based on the number of males involved and typical results are released within 9 business days from the date of receipt of the DNA samples. Common participants include a son's possible nephews and uncles (brothers of the alleged father), brothers and paternal grandfather.
EXAMPLE OF A POSSBILE Y-STR TEST SITUATION
Imagine a paternity situation where the alleged father is missing. A Y-STR test cannot distinguish a specific relationship between males who belong to the same paternal line - like paternity. However it can be used for excluding males from an alleged biological relationship in this situation. For example, if a male child and his alleged uncle (alleged father's full brother) are tested, their Y-STR profiles must match. If they do not match then the alleged uncle is excluded (not considered a biological uncle) and the alleged father is probably not the biological father.
Y-STR DNA Test vs. Ancestry DNA Testing
Unlike ancestry DNA tests which give you a picture of your family and trace your geographical roots the Y-STR DNA test will tell you whether or not your Y-STRs are consistent or not consistent with the conclusion that you and the possible relative may be related through a common male ancestor.
