Choose the maternity DNA testing option that best matches your situation. If you need results for court, immigration, or another legal matter, select the Legal Maternity DNA Test. If you want results for personal knowledge only, choose the At-Home Maternity DNA Test.
A DNA maternity test determines whether a woman is the biological mother of a child by comparing DNA samples from the alleged mother and child. This testing option is commonly used when questions arise about a child's biological maternity or when reliable biological evidence is needed to confirm the claimed mother-child relationship.
Every person inherits half of their DNA from their biological mother and the other half from their biological father. During a maternity DNA test, the laboratory compares the child's DNA with the alleged mother's DNA to determine whether the child's maternal genetic markers match the alleged mother's DNA. If they match, the results support the claimed biological relationship. If they do not match, the alleged mother is excluded as the biological mother.
Unlike many other family relationship DNA tests, a standard maternity DNA test generally requires DNA samples only from the alleged mother and the child. The laboratory compares these two DNA profiles directly to determine whether a biological mother-child relationship exists.
Most maternity DNA tests are performed using painless cheek (buccal) swab samples. The DNA collection process is quick, non-invasive, and is the same sample collection method used for paternity and many other family relationship DNA tests.
